How much does a California bail bond cost?
The premium is a percentage of the court's bail amount, based on rates the surety files with the state. Agents can split that into a down payment and a plan, so the amount needed to start is usually far below the full premium.
What do you need from me to start?
Full legal name, date of birth, and the city or jail where the person was booked. A booking number or the listed charge helps but is not required.
Is collateral required?
Not on most bonds. Larger bail amounts or unusual circumstances can change that. Ask directly and the agent will tell you what your bond needs.
Can a bond be posted overnight or on a holiday?
Yes. Jails accept bonds around the clock, and this line is answered live 24/7/365.
How fast will someone be released?
Nobody can promise that. Once the bond is posted, release timing depends entirely on the facility's processing and staffing.
Who signs, and what do they take on?
An indemnitor — typically family or a close friend — signs the agreement, taking responsibility for court appearances and the agreed premium. Obligations should be explained before signing.
What if a court date is missed?
The court can forfeit the bond and issue a warrant. Contact the bail agent and the defense attorney immediately; acting quickly matters.
Can bail be reduced?
A defense attorney can ask the court for a bail reduction at arraignment or by motion. That is a legal decision for the court, and a bail agent cannot make it happen.

What is bail, in one sentence?
Bail is the condition a California court sets for releasing a person before their case is decided, on the promise that they will return for every scheduled appearance.
What is the difference between bail and a bail bond?
Bail is the amount the court requires. A bail bond is a surety company's written guarantee filed on the defendant's behalf so the family does not have to bring the full amount in cash.
Who sets the bail amount?
The court. Many counties publish a bail schedule that jail staff apply at booking, and a judge can keep, raise, lower, or set aside that amount at arraignment.
Can you tell me the bail amount before I call?
Not from a web page. Once a booking has posted, an agent can often confirm the amount by phone using the full name and date of birth.
Do I get the premium back after the case ends?
No. The premium is the earned cost of the bond and is not refundable when the case closes, regardless of the result.
Can several relatives split the cost?
Frequently, yes. It is common for parents, siblings, and close friends to share the down payment and the plan. The agent explains who is signing for what before anything is executed.
What forms of payment are accepted?
That depends on the independent bail bond company writing the bond. Ask on the call and the agent will tell you exactly what that office accepts.
Does a bail bond affect my credit?
Applying does not put a loan on your credit report. If a signed payment plan goes unpaid, the bail bond company can pursue collection like any other debt, so only sign for terms you can keep.
What is a hold, and why does it block release?
A hold is a separate legal reason a person must stay in custody — another county's warrant, a probation or parole matter, or an immigration detainer. Posting bail on one case does not clear a hold on another.
What is a bail schedule?
A county-by-county list that assigns a presumptive bail amount to charges, used at the jail before a judge reviews the case. Schedules are revised periodically and differ between counties.
What happens at arraignment?
The charges are formally read, a plea is entered, and the judge addresses custody and bail. It is the first point where a defense attorney can argue for a change in the amount or conditions.
Can a bond be posted at any California jail?
Bonds are posted at the facility or court that holds the case, anywhere in the state's 58 counties. Tell the agent the city or jail and they will route it correctly.
What if the person is moved to another facility?
Transfers between city lockups and county jails are routine during booking. Let the agent know as soon as you learn of a move so the bond goes to the right place.
Can I bail out someone who is not family?
Yes. Any qualified adult willing to sign as indemnitor and accept the obligations can arrange a bond. Qualification is not automatic and is reviewed on the call.
What are the defendant's obligations after release?
Appear at every court date, follow any conditions the court sets, and stay reachable to the bail agent. Those duties continue until the case is resolved and the bond is exonerated.
What does exonerated mean?
It means the court has released the bond from liability because the case reached its conclusion and the appearance obligations were met.
Can a bond be reinstated after a missed court date?
Sometimes the court will reinstate a forfeited bond, often with conditions and added costs. It depends on the judge, the circumstances, and how quickly it is addressed — call the agent and the defense attorney the same day.
Do you handle immigration bonds?
Immigration bonds are a separate federal process from California criminal bail. Call and describe the situation, and the agent will tell you plainly whether they can help.
